Pit stops along the Route of the Bavarian Experience

A ramble through charming villages and historical towns

A trip along the German Alpine Road takes you past all the most popular holiday resorts in the Allgäu and Upper Bavaria. And there are a thousand reasons to look forward to the trip, not just to the destination.

Historical market streets, old farmer's houses and the beautiful Lüftl murals on many buildings are testimony to times gone by. So park your car or motorbike and set off on a stroll – you can stop for a bite at one of the traditional Bavarian inns and enjoy Bavarian specialities, the Allgäu's famous cheese noodles or crispy roast pork.

Lindau in Lake Constance is a historic island with unmistakable charm. Surrounded by a crystal-clear lake, a lush green area and in the background rises a mostly snow-capped mountain scenery. With its centuries-old buildings, lively squares and picturesque streets, it exudes an almost Mediterranean flair.

Scheidegg im Allgäu is a sun-soaked town above Lake Constance where you will find waterfalls, picturesque panoramic views and the skywalk allgäu treetop trail.

On alpine terrain, the Alpine road in Bad Hindelang passes the districts Vorderhindelang, Hindelang and Bad Oberdorf, with the turnoff to Hinterstein and leads over the Jochpass, on which 105 bends complete 360 meters of altitude difference, continue past the high-lying districts Oberjoch and Unterjoch.

The Allgäu resort is as varied in all seasons as the landscape that surrounds it. 13 districts characterize the broad valley in the transition from the lovely Alpine foothills to the peaks of the Allgäu and Tyrolean mountains. The world famous royal palaces Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein are only 15 kilometers away.

In Füssen, the German Alpine Road meets the Romantic Road and the Via Claudia Augusta. The romantic old quarter almost has an Italian feel and is a delight to explore with its pavement cafés and squares. There are panoramic trails for walkers and cyclists on the higher terrain – and the next swimming lake is never far away.

Performed every ten years, the Oberammergau Passion Play attracts visitors from around the world. But this small town in the Ammergau Alps is also known for its master woodcarvers who produce religious art. The tradition of woodcarving with Christian motifs dates back to the 16th century. Oberammergau is also famous for its beautiful Lüftl murals.

Set amid a breathtaking mountain landscape at the foot of Mount Zugspitze (2,962m), Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the epitome of dramatic and unspoilt Alpine scenery. A region that has been shaped by people and their culture, where you encounter traditional Bavarian customs that have remained unchanged for centuries.

The river Isar meanders through the town of Bad Tölz like a turquoise ribbon. On the eastern bank is the picturesque old quarter, where Lüftl art adorns the baroque facades of Marktstrasse. Yet for all the architectural splendour and vibrancy of the town, there is no shortage of stunning natural scenery. To the south you can see the majestic Alps.

From the production of Bavarian whisky, to a rapid descent from the Schliersbergalm to the idyllic mountain lake Spitzingsee, you will experience a variety of attractions for the whole family.

Fed by crystal-clear mountain streams, Lake Tegernsee is one of the cleanest Waters of Germany.

Right at the heart of the Inn valley in Bavaria, surrounded by rolling hills and mountain peaks, lies the holiday destination of Oberaudorf. This unspoilt and idyllic location has plenty to offer anyone who loves culture, the great outdoors and food and drink.

At the foot of Mount Kampenwand, the region’s most famous landmark thanks to its three peaks, lies Aschau im Chiemgau, a climatic health resort steeped in tradition.

This idyllic mountain village has a centre that is unmistakeably Upper Bavarian and is home to many traditional restaurants and guesthouses. It offers stunning scenery, Alpine meadows and internationally acclaimed attractions. If you like skiing be sure to visit the slopes of Winklmoos-Alm.

Berchtesgaden is a wonderful mixture of unspoilt nature in Berchtesgaden National Park and a historical town centre that is perfect for strolling around.

Even if Munich is not directly on the German Alpine Road, you should include the city in your plans as a stop on your travels to or from Germany by plane, train or car. From here, you can reach the start of the German Alpine Road via the A8 autobahn (Schönau am Königssee) or A96 autobahn (Lindau im Bodensee).
