The Herzogstand, with its breathtaking Alpine panorama, was one of Ludwig II’s favourite places. The mountain range, which includes the secondary peaks of Martinskopf and Fahrenberg, takes its name from the Bavarian Dukes Wilhelm IV and Ludwig X. They were already using the area for hunting as early as the 16th century. You can follow in the footsteps of the Wittelsbach nobility on numerous walks of varying levels of difficulty.

With two large gondola cabins, the Herzogstandbahn cable car covers the 800 metres in altitude in four minutes. From the mountain station at an altitude of 1,600 metres, it is a short walk of around 15 minutes to the mountain inn. On an easy path leading from the mountain station towards the Herzogstand lies the fascinating nature trail. Here, you can learn a great deal about the geology, flora and fauna of this mountain, parts of which are under special protection.
